Lord Mercat's Big Thread of Everything Imaginable

Post by Lord Mercat » Fri Oct 28, 2011 5:21 am

Okay, so I figured since I had an enormous amount of stuff to share here, and will have much more in the future, it would be best if I made just one giant thread for it. The following are all characters/creations from my own Galactic Kingdom, which I still have yet to come up with a good name for :?

I will be including things I have already posted in other threads here, just so everything stays together. Not everything I have already posted will end up here right away, but it will as soon as I get around to it.

Anyway, so in order to avoid confusion, I am going to separate this post into two sections, the first part will consist of things/factions/etc unaligned with my main force, the second part will consist of troops/characters/etc that are aligned with the Galactic Dominion.

Unaligned

Okay, So first off here we have Felix Nocturne and his Group of Mercenaries, consisting of currently just 3 members, Nocturne himself, with the OT Chainsword, and his right hand man and heavy sniper, Marcus Aurum, and also a Rogue Space Ninja whom I have yet to name:

Image

And so you can all see Marcus' ridiciulously oversized sniper rifle:

Image

And then coming up next we have My Mafioso-esque hitman, still unamed, with his signature 11 barrel shotgun, The Decimator:

Image

And right after this we have what is probably my favorite faction that I have yet made, my brand new faction of Space Banditos. Yes, Banditos, but in space. It is a small faction of about 20 troops, divided into 5 types of troops:

First up we have the Red Bandannas, these are the brunt of the gang, and come equipped with stolen ultra-heavy blasters, and of course alcohol for various hilarious effects:

Image

And if we look closer here, we can see Pablo being chased down by his wife, who has been trying, to no avail for years now, to curb his rampant alchoholism:

Image

And over in this corner we have the hapless Billy Crown. Poor Billy drew the short straw and was sent to pick up some more beer for his buddies' bachelor party. Unfortunately for Billy, the Space Banditos have just recently raided the entire area of all manner of alcoholic beverages. Not one to let his buddies down however, brave, foolish Billy opted to try and steal some back from the Banditos, a rather unwise plan as we can see from the results:

Image

But don't fret folks, this won't be the last we'll be seeing of Billy Crown. His life of torture and hard luck is only just beginning, as we can see from this next set of photos here, Billy has had a run-in with the Banditos' Gunslingers, easily identifiable by their backwards black bandanas, a sign of superior rank over the cannon fodder red bandanas. These Gunslingers each wield dual high-tech laser repeaters, just as powerful as the much more cumbersome ultra-heavy blaster the red bandanas use, but far lighter and with a much better rate of fire. Anyway, it seems the Gunslingers have caught poor Billy trying to steal a bottle of beer; again:

Image

Ah well, at least he went down in a glorious blaze of gunfire this time, more than I can say for his near future:

Image

And a closer look at the Gunslingers:

Image

And then next up we have some of the toughest fighters in the Bandito crew, the Brawlers. These guys like to fight up close and personal with their massive bowie knives and broken bottles, and are identifiable by their black bandannas turn forwards and their battle ready spiked pauldrons (I actually ended up having only one of the pauldrons, I have ordered two more, but they haven't gotten here yet. Eventually all the brawlers will have them) It seems that once again, Billy Crown has been caught attempting to steal a beer. The brawlers have responded by stabbing him in the face with that same beer bottle. Poor Billy:

Image

Oh, the horror:
Image

And, it seems that poor Billy hasn't given up yet, as he seems to have (again) been caught by the Banditos, only this time, he has had a run in with the explosives troops, identifiable by their black bandannas turned forwards, and their rocket launchers. It seems that they have the most decisive answer for Billy's theft as of yet:

Image

Well, at least the Banditos are having fun:
Image

This is probably one of my most favorite images I have ever taken:
Image

Enjoying the show:
Image

And- oh? What's this? It seems that Billy has found the White Bandannas, the medics of the Banditos. They certainly seem quite a bit nicer than the rest of the Banditos, here they've simply given Billy the beer he has so desired. Has Billy's torturous quest come to an end so soon?:
Image

But alas for poor Billy, it seems it was a setup all along. The White Bandannas laugh it up and drink to poor Billy being shot down by the Banditos second in command, the Officer and second toughest Bandito in the whole crew; Garbanzo Nova:

Image

Oh the humanity! (figanity?):
Image

And a good look at the face of Garbanzo Nova:
Image

Again, this is one of those images I just love:
Image

And then it seems that, so soon after his latest run in with the band, poor Billy has finally met the Banditos fearless leader, the dreaded El Drago! Billy just can't catch a break, one moment he's had his torso blown clear out from under him, and the next he's decapitated by an expertly thrown laser machete, and gunned to pieces by a scoped Machine pistol:

Image

He even had the beer in his hand this time. So close, yet so far.
Image
Image

And a better look at the Bandito leader himself:
Image

And of course, what's a faction without the group shot? It seems that once again, poor Billy has got himself into a bit of a tight spot:

Image

And it seems also, that Pablo's wife has finally caught up to him, could this spell the end of his drinking days?:
Image

And the overview, expect to see these guys in the upcoming forum campaign I am currently working on:
Image

And up next we have again, Billy Crown, who seems to have run afoul of a wandering swordsman. It just doesn't seem to be his day:
Image

Demonstrating the Rising Slash technique:
Image

And a Windcutter type of slash. I wasn't overly happy with how this came out, but I learned from it, and made a much better one that will be coming up further down in this post. A good part of all these pics was to test out what I could do in terms of attacks/gore/supernatural techniques with the parts I currently have on hand:
Image

And yes, that is an actual metal katana blade that the swordsman is wielding. As part of the mythos of my Galactic Dominion, there are 13 such Blades, made of the mythical material known only as Truesteel. The blade in the pictures is the Yoru no Kaze, or the Night Wind. (Though the 13 Truesteel weapons are refferred to as Blades, not all of them are actually swords.):
Image

And the final shot of the swordsman:
Image

And that's all she wrote for the Unaligned! Next up are those who are allied with (or are assumed to be) my main faction:

Aligned

First off here let me explain the governmental system here. It's basically a feudal society on a Galactic scale (no I wasn't going for ideal here). There are essentially five classes, Royalty, which consists only of the King and his immediate family, Nobility, which consists of those born into families that were assigned governance of planetary regions by the First of the Galaxy Kings, the Military, Artisans, and everyone else. Nobility is split into three sub-classes, High Nobles, or those Nobles given their right to nobility by the Galaxy King himself, consisting of Archdukes (only five), Dukes, and Marquesses; Regular Nobles are those Nobles given their nobility from High Nobles, who assigned out fiefdoms of their own land in order to better govern the vast amount of planets they have under their control. Regular Nobles consist of Counts, Viscounts, and Barons. And the bottom of the rung for the Nobility are Sub-Nobles, consisting of Magistrates, appointed by a Noble to govern a planet, and Governors(technically governors are sub-sub nobles, but this technicality is overlooked), appointed by a Magistrate to rule a region of their planet.

Anyway, enough on Background here, as I'm sure you just want to see the pictures, So here we have once again Billy Crown (will he ever learn?) who seems to have run afoul of the First Archduke, Archduke Fenrir Securis:
Image

Summoning something, what could it be?
Image

Oh my, it's the largest OT Chainsword I've ever seen. This can't possibly end well for Billy:
Image

And it seems it didn't:
Image

Anyway, so I have a lot of history written up for this archduke, but I won't bore you with it today. Long story short he is the commander of the Deathseekers, some of the strongest warriors in the entire Galaxy:
Image

Okay, and up next it seems our friend Billy has run into Viktoria Von Murder, daughter of the Dominion's head scientist, Viktor Von Murder. Viktoria is a brilliant, if not entirely insane inventor who builds weapons of war and the like for the Dominion; it doesn't look like things will go Billy's way at all today, will they?:
Image

It seems she wants to show off her line of Slaughterbots! On the far left there, with all the missiles is the MX-5400 Phalanx, an experimental cyber augmented soldier (read-Slaughterbot) built to do two things- Hold a position, and lay down overwhelming firepower without taking up too much space on the battlefield. It does both of these things very well. Next, to the far left, holding the OTCs with the lightsaber handles is the Mark V Slaughterbot, soon to be replaced by the much more deadly Slaughterbot Mark VI, seen in the middle:
Image

Better look at the Mark V and Mark VI:
Image

The Phalanx is an experimental unit, so for the foreseeable future there will only be one, but should it perform well it may be picked up for mass production (to an extent):
Image

Uh oh, looks like Billy's lost his cool. He doesn't seem sure if she wants to simply show off her Slaughterbots, or test them on someone:
Image

Why, it seems like it's Billy's lucky day! Viktoria Von Murder was indeed merely showing them off! She already did all the testing on Billy's friends and family, what a relief!
Image

Oh, but whats this? She DOES want to test something? Well, what could it be? A Flamethrower? Oh, this might not be Billy's lucky day after all:
Image

Run Billy Run!:
Image

Hurry!:
Image

It seems it may just be Billy's lucky day after all, Viktoria's just rolled a critical failure!:
Image

What's that she says? Something else she still might want to test?
Image

Her hydraulic leg augmentations?
Image

RUN FASTER BILLY!:
Image

FASTER!:
Image

Oh dear. It seems we may not be seeing Billy again for a while:
Image

Right, so anyway, up next is a small unit I put together of my main army. I have many times this amount of troops and such, but I am still working on army building, and I still have no large baseplates, so I just put together this very small strike team just to show off some of my troop types. The X-57 Slepnir Assault Hoverbikes are on the far left, directly next to them are several regular troopers, wielding standard heavy laser assault rifles. On the far right are a few heavy troopers wielding heavy laser/plasma shotguns. In the front commanding the unit is a Templar (still haven't made the templar's standard weapon yet, on my to-do list), flanked by a commando (guy with the serious glare off his helmet) and a Dragoon:
Image

Dragoon will eventually have a custom Laser Spear, vs the normal pike it is currently holding:
Image

Another overview:
Image

Second Frontview:
Image

Okay, and following this we have some of the highest ranking military officers, 3 of the 12 Divine Generals of the Dominion. (I actually have all 12 bodies/armor made already, but have not settled on heads/weapons for the other 9). From the Left to the Right is First Division General Marjory Darq, 2nd Division General To be named later, and the Fourth Division General, also to be named later. Each of the Divine Generals heads up one of the 12 divisions of the Dominion's military. All of the generals are considered the Hands of the Galaxy King, and serve to carry out his will militarily. As such, all are extremely powerful, and have gotten to their position through merit, rather than birth. While maintaining the position of a Divine General, or higher, one is granted the same societal status of a Noble:

Image

And then here we have the 4 Grand Marshals, who rank even above the Divine Generals. Each Grand Marshal commands the entirety of the military troops in his quadrant of the galaxy. And yes, that is a BFenix head.
Image

Show off the jetpack:
Image

And yes, the Marshal in the center was also an experiment on how much Dakka I could stick onto a minifig. He is armed with a minigun, two laser guided precision missiles, two precision plasma missiles, arm-mounted rail cannons, arm mounted laser blades for CC, arm mounted infinite laser repeaters, and the most powerful weapon in his arsenal, the molecular phase cannon on his chest:
Image

and one more view (yes, one of the marshals is purposely displayed not facing the camera in all of these pictures.):
Image

Oh? and what is this? It's Marchioness Sieglinde Reglay, and a fig we've never seen before? A showdown, perhaps?
Image

And of course, look who's dropped in!:
Image

Image

Image

And it looks like he's okay! Billy must be on some kind of crit streak to survive a fall that bad:
Image

Uh Oh, looks like this wasn't just any showdown, but a supernaturally powered showdown! How will (or won't) Billy get out of this one?:

Image

This took forever to set up, so I have a lot of pictures of it!:
Image

This is the better windcutter technique I was referring to earlier:
Image

You're going to have to run faster than that Billy!:
Image

Image

Image

Love this angle:
Image

Image

Image

And Billy leaps for his life, as the duelists Clash ever closer!:
Image

Image

Pressing the Attack:
Image

Image

Image

And they close with a thunderous clap of power! But where is billy?:
Image

Oh, there he is:
Image

WHOOOSSSHHH
Image

Image

And the combatants land on opposite sides, holding their strokes for no other reason than to look ridiculously cool, this can only mean one thing, someone's about to be mincemeat, or have been mincemeat, but only just now realize it. Also, where did Billy get to? Methinks there was a forgetful photographer here:
Image

There's Billy!:
Image

Just what kind of Figs are these?:
Image

Hmmmm, nothing happening yet, both of em are still kicking.
Image

(brown text is sieglinde, indigo is the guy): Saaaayy, shouldn't you be uh, dead?
Image

Shouldn't you?
Image

What? No way, you should be-unless...No way? You don't think...
Image

Why's everyone looking at me?
Image

Well, I'll be damned
Huh.
Image

Well, I guess it's a draw then.
Yeah, you thinking what I'm thinking?
Tiebreaker drinking match?
Oh yeah!
Image

......................
What?
Image

The Hell is that?
What? Thi- oh, oh this is uh, this is-
Image

Tequila.
Riiight, whatever- first one to pass out loses.
Right.
Image

And just who might the winner of our contest be?

Why, It's our old friend Pablo! It looks like he managed to escape his wife after all! Looks like someone gets a happy end today!:
Image

And next, is the info on this mysterious purple Knight. Basically, I realized that with the way I am building my army and factions and whatnot, I may not get around to building any significant number of Space Pirates anytime soon. So I needed (read-wanted) a sigfig who would be more involved in things happening in my dominion. This, combined with a challenge from a friend to make a faction inspired by the color purple, led me to make my new sigfig (Pirate Lord Mercat is still around, he just won't be my sig fig anymore, because it may be a long time before I end up doing anything with him) Knight Lord Mercat Cruor:

Image

Shown here wielding his lance, one of the 13 truesteel blades, Sanguis, the Blood Lance. Mercat will be the hero of the faction I am working on next, ( don't worry I am always working on my main army, so that has not been put on the backburner or anything) the Amaranthine Order. I have ordered parts and such already, but it may be a few weeks before I have everything together. I'll post backstory and such for them once they are finished. As it stands Mercat himself still needs a bit of work- the fig is done, but I am waiting on parts to make his greatsword (another one of the 13 truesteel swords) he'll carry sheathed on his back, and perhaps a shotgun as well.
Image

And without anything obscuring the view:
Image

And Finally, a group picture of the Heroes I have finished thus far for my upcoming forum campaign- look forward to it! We have from left to right, Fiora Securis- Berserker, Arturia Celestine- Star Knight (yes she does have ties to the Amaranthine Order), and Guy Rosenthal, Duelist. Still have to make sniper/explosives hero and Medic/Engineer/Techmage hero.:
Image

And that's it for now, hope you enjoyed what I have! Upcoming projects for anyone interested is of course, finishing my main army, my AC, a jackal battlemech, more Dragoons, more Slaughterbots, the Amaranthine Order, a giant UFO shaped like a sombrero for the space Banditos, and anything else I might interest myself in making.

I'll be constantly updating and adding things to this topic, so be sure to check it every once in a while.

Fantastic stuff, but it looks like your camera is struggling. You might see if you can find a way to provide a little more fill light for it.

@Stubby

Yeah, I've been working on my picture taking, and it's been getting better but I still need a good light setup to really improve, I'll definitely be experimenting. I bought a few extra lamps recently, so I'll see how that works out after they're setup. Failing that, Saturnalia's coming up so I'll see if I can't score a more awesome camera!

I think what Stubby is saying is you need more light to fill in around the sides and top... not that you need a new camera. See all those dark shadows behind things that are obscuring the definition of your objects? Some lighting coming in from the sides and top will cut those down and make everything look a whole lot better (more clear and defined).

What I've had good luck with in the past is taking those cheap 8" round metal clamp light and putting in an 80 or 100 watt full spectrum CFL bulb. Then taking some thin paper (tissue paper, tracing paper, or anything that lets most of the light through) and covering the hood in that to make a diffuser. Now you have some good lights to fill in around your objects. Figure on three at least; one on each side and one on top.

You can also make the poor man's light box. Again I've had good luck with it. Here's some instructions, pictures, as well as before & after shots. Only thing I don't like about the light box is that not everything fits in it.

Amazing stuff. The one big riddle is how Billy always managed to come back from the dead. I think he should be given an orange hoody.

@ Morganm- Okay, thanks for the advice! Will put it to good use!
THis stuff is great I love your effects but some of your guys weapons and armor seem a bit ungaingly
Thanks! Some of it might seem ungainly but I see it as more of a stylistic choice. The way I customize my minifigs, they always retain maximum pose-ability, it's one of the major things I consider when making them, because what good is a Lego fig you can't pose, no matter how awesome it may be? Also, this is brikwars, if ridiculously over the top weaponry and/or armor has no place here, then it has no place at all.
The one big riddle is how Billy always managed to come back from the dead.
:mystery:

But I can say for certain that you have indeed not seen the last of Billy Crown.

Whoah. Love those wind effects, they were killer! As to the figs themselves, I like 'em. Some fo them are a bit too bulky for no reason for my taste, but I can live with it. Now I'm just waiting for that group shot you keep promising!

A new camera wouldn't hurt either of course, but until you're ready to make that upgrade, a better lighting setup is always a good intermediate step. The more incoming photons the camera has to work with, the less difference the camera quality makes.

The other issue I'm seeing is heavy jpeg compression, which really shows its artifacting wherever there are red or transparent-orange elements. Check to see if your camera has a setting for image compression / image quality in any of its menus. These minifigs are so nicely customized and the vignettes so well set up and framed, everything's right where you want it if you can just give the image quality that last little boost.
