Nagateppo Monastery, circa TL3
The Nagateppo Monastery, snugly nestled among the cliffs of the tranquil Kingiri Mountains, has been invaded and sacked by a cruel mountain demon and his gang of robbers! News of the monks' cruel extermination reached the local daimyo, and he immediately sent troops to reclaim the temple. A local dragon sorceror, seeing the approaching army, prepared his army of evil sohei monks, ninja, and unnatural creatures to make a surprise attack on the two forces and claim the sacred shrine for his own.
Setup
We
had some new rules to playtest for medieval Japanese battles, so we set up
this quick scenario with three armies and a relatively basic battlefield.
The monastery is set against a cliff to the north which was considered to
extend infinitely upward and to the east and west. To the south and
west of the monastery are clumps of simple vegetation. A little ways
to the south we set down a CRAPP to act as a hill. To the east we set
another CRAPP hill in the middle of a lake, out of which a grove of bamboo
grew. The pit in this hill was set up with spears and declared to be
the Pit of Death - any unit falling into this pit would be killed instantly.
The monastery is a three-story building with an armor of 2d10. Inside the walls are a sacred shrine and a tatami mat, each of which may give special oppotunities to the army that controls them. Neither were taken advantage of during this battle.
A small group of peasants armed with scythes accompanied a surly Medik next to the southern hill. These were not controlled by any player but guided by a simple set of rules. Each turn, the Medik moves toward the nearest dead body to attempt to revive it. The peasants follow the Medik around, and make no attacks except to defend themselves and the Medik.
Stupendous Feats were limited to 'Anything you might see in a Jet Li movie.' We decided to forgo making iniative rolls each round, instead taking turns in the following order: Imperials, Peasants, Bandits, Sorceror. Budgets were shuffled around until each of the three main armies were worth precisely 437 CP. We rolled dice to see which player got to take command of which army. The allotment ended up as follows:

Most of the units used in this battle are not listed in the BrikWars rulebook because they are either new in the Japanese rules or we just made them up for the sake of this battle. Ashigaru peasant soldiers are equivalent to Troopers. Samurai officers are equivalent to Heroes. Regular samurai are somewhere between the two. Porters are like non-pacifistic Slaves. The Dragon Sorceror and the Timmy Lord are unique and were made using the Supernatural Powers rules.
The Imperial Army has the advantage of surprise (the Bandits were busy watching a Sumo match on the tatami mat), so Joe got to set up his forces however he wished and take the first turn. Dave had a class to go to, so we decided that the Black Dragon Sorceror would not arrive on the battlefield until whatever time Dave got back from class. Joe set up his forces as follows:
From the west came a unit of cannons; from the southwest, the mounted samurai and ashigaru spearmen. Behind the hill to the south were the musketeers, and trooping in behind the bamboo grove to the east were the foot samurai.
