Armoury sticky threads

Post by Bragallot » Fri Feb 07, 2020 7:06 am

Doesn't The Armoury have a couple too many stickied threads? You have to scroll down several times to see the latest ones.

On the internet people are almost exclusively excited about new stuff and ongoing conversations so these things should probably get the spotlight.

It's also not like there's such a big influx of new people who haven't already seen these threads, y'know.

A single 'Armoury Hall Of Fame' thread with links to the best posts could be a proper alternative, imo.

Alright, though I'll wait a few days to see if other people will share their opinion on it.

You could also make a subforum in the armory that has the historic threads.

At the moment there are only 8 stickies, not so much.
But I suppose the LDD subforum, and the armory rules bits do force a bit more scrolling.
I think that would only be a problem for phone users.
Phones are not really the best way to view forums, so they are accustomed to suffering :D

Yeah. It's just my opinion, and it's not like scrolling is such a big deal, but I think on a forum the newest stuff should always be the stuff you see first. Just creates a better sense of activity. Our brains (for those of us with functioning ones  ) are also more interested in stuff that's new so I think I can back this scientifically, or at least claim to (which is good enough these days). :rtfm:

This is the kind of thing that might work better as a wiki page.

Probably not too many, but then people aren't really putting much work into the Wiki anymore either, I think. If we could have certain words on the forum here automatically link to the Wiki, it would be great to get more people interested in it, I think, and also to let new players learn some of the basic things of the Brikverse (like Dimmies, the major empires, OT, etc.). They get some of that through the Rulebook of course but the Rulebook mostly references it rather than focuses on it.

We lost the ability to auto-buttplug words into links with the last big forum upgrade. But that's okay.

I was going to give some hard numbers about wiki use, but I guess I still haven't got around to hooking up google analytics to those pages.

I've never thought of the wiki as something people need to keep up with or pay attention to the way they do a forum thread or the discord; it's more like the dusty old encyclopedia on the shelf you pull out when you need to reference something.

For that purpose it's a perfect place to keep a repository of historic armory threads. Just sticky a link to it at the top of the subforum, and people can find it when they need it.

I think of the wiki that way too.

If you make a sticky post at top of armory, you might as well put links to the forum posts there directly like Brag mentioned.
Doing it on Wiki is just extra work.
Or you could do both and be double linked. I can tell Brag is feeling industrious.

Or you could put links to good old posts in the Discord... LOL :D

We've been discussing on Discord that at the very least, we should replace Kaplan's army overwatch index thread with a link to a wiki page. You could probably do something similar for forum battles/magic soaps. The wiki pages would probably link back to forum threads, but the advantage is that more people can be involved in the upkeep of the indices.

Sure, as long as you either accept that the list of spotlight posts is ever going to need updating, or you're committed to making a new sticky post every time it does. The advantage of making the sticky post a link to the wiki page that anyone can update as needed is that you only have to do it once and it stays current on its own*.

* Meaning that if anyone cares enough that it isn't current, they care enough to update it. And if they don't care enough to update it themselves, then they don't get to complain.
