August 20 Brikwar: @ Philly / Apocabriks

by Rev. Sylvanus
Greetings one and all. After a several month lag in gaming activities, I finally have for you another edition of Rev's Battle Reports! The match up this time is the long anticipated Philadelphia Brikwar that has been all the rage on the Battle Organization Sub-forum. Gaming was held on August 20, Saturday, at Redcap's Corner gaming store in University City of Philadelphia.

I'll be just a little candid for a moment. The turnout was much lower than either Benn or I had hoped. Not trying to point fingers or lay blame. Just being honest. Some friends that I had roped into it cancelled last minute as did a number of forum goers. NEVERTHELESS, we all had an awesome time! One giant field featuring armies by yours truly, dirtycajun, redcapscorner, a person we'll call Ted, and lawmaster [unlike previous battle reports, I do actually remember the Ted's first name; however, unless they clear me to use their names, I'll protect them from even the smallest chance of internet crime by using call-signs for them 8) ).

But you are bored with this wall of text. So let the Battle Report Commence!!!

Turn 0: Setup/Army Composition!

Image

Image

Image

Image

The first series of photos gives you an impression of redcap's undead army he was fielding. I had fought a permutation of this list some time ago. Since then it has been quite updated featuring a chtulu-ish-looking necromancer, heavy bruiser-type Anne Frankenmen, three separate skeletal squads, halberd-wielding wraiths, spectres (all of whom have 5d6 worth of supernatural dice!!! ), cursed mummies, and a massive cursed altar (the curse requires the living within its radius to reroll skill checks and take the lower result!!!; at the beginning of the battle I had convinced redcap to tone the radius of the altar to 6"...but now I think it should be upped to 10" or 12").

Image

Image

This is dirtycajun's horror corps that followers of my battle reports will know and love. Not much has changed here except that he has pulled out his full complement of jeeps and has a gun-caddy mummy.

Image

Image

These photos are of my newest team. Space Knights. They feature 2 Dreadnuts (whom everyone on the table feared for inordinate reasons...), a squad of razor crossbowmen, two minigun heavies, a techmage hero, a meckanic, Sir Sebastian and his noble butler Bonswa.

Image

"Ted" was watching us set up and got really interested in playing. He walked away when he said he didn't have any legos, so I flagged him down and said he could borrow mine! So "Ted" is fielding a detachment of Alltimate Blue Knight Hardsuits.

Image

Image

Here are two corner shots of the battlefield we all put together. The battlefield has a significant number of features. To the left is a massive mountain tower (which no one ever scaled...), there is a large ship, a series of interconnected mountain bridges that lead to the infamous Hula-girl on the plateau, a wrecked Space Police Frigate, and at the far end of the battlefield is a fortress set up by the lawmaster!

Image

Here is a much better shot of said fortress, which is lined wall-to-wall with all sorts of lazer-gates, explosives, guns, missiles, catapults, satellites, and other goodies.

Image

Image

Image

lawmaster's force is by far the most numerous, encompassing all of the units stationed on the walls, many more squads behind the walls, 3 geo-golems, a massive blade-tank, a sea monster tucked away somewhere, and a hero with a massive ore club!

Turn 1

REV.

Image

Rev's first turn includes some fanning out. I have deployed in the bottom right corner of the field. Immediately in front of me is redcap's undead legion, and "Ted's" Blue Knights are immediately to my left. One Dread approaches either opponent, the heavies are situated in ruined tower, and Sir Sebastian spots a wench whom he would like to court!!!

Image

The minigun heavies open up on some nearby specters, wraiths, and mummies, as do some razorbowmen and...

Image

...the Dreadnut with the Autocannon. Total casualties amount to 5 undead!

"TED"

Image

On his turn, "Ted's" Blue Knights immediately fan out toward various targets, most of them in lawmaster's fortress.

Image

The Blue Knight Hero decides he wants to take on Dreadnut #2. Bring it! After a failed attack, the Hero tries to bullrush the Nut. The end result is one Dreadnut with its boot firmly planted on the Hero's chest

REDCAP

Image

It seems the Rev has provoked the ire of the unliving. The cursed monument approaches over its fallen comrades but whiffs on attacking the Dreadnut. The specters eerily float hither and thither, many of them traversing through walls! The Necromancer (who is chilling by Hula-girl), failed in an attempt to seduce a black dragon to his team.

Image

Here is the first Space Knight casualty. A blast of nega-energy from the specters slays a Rocket Knight.

LAWMASTER

Image

This photo is BEYOND blurry, but it is supposed to show lawmaster's defenders obliterating some more undead who crept near the walls.

Image

On the other side of the fortress...with nothing in range yet...lawmaster's figs decide to set fire to the field with rockets and flamethrowers.

Image

Here's a shot of the battlefield, the fire-field, and dirtycajun's deployment zone on the ship...

DIRTYCAJUN

Image

If you haven't been introduced to the Horror Sergeant, breathe a sigh of relief. The Sergeant materializes in the middle of lawmaster's base and begins assaulting staff and computer technicians.

Image

Image

On the left flank, the pumpkin mecha then does a number on the rooftop defenders with his missiles and linked laser rifles.

Turn 2

REV

Image

On the Rev's next turn, the techmage has a brilliant plan for overcoming lawmaster's fortress defenses...the techmage manually revitalizes the downed Space Police ship's electronics and sends the hulk crashing into the fortress walls!

Image

Elsewhere on my side of the field, razorbows, the heavies, and the Dreadnut combine fire to take down the Cursed Monument (which crushes the mummies carrying it). On the mountain top (not shown), Bonswa and Sebastian continue their pursuit of the Hula-girl

"TED"

Image

Toward the center of the field, "Ted" is having a productive second turn. A Blue Knight flanks and tears to pieces another one of the Rev's Rocket Knights.

Image

The other Knight Hardsuits team up and launch missiles at one of the structure towers in the Fortress. It obviously collapses! (But exposes the reserve Golems...). In other news, the Blue Knight hero attempts to push the Dreadnut off, but is thoroughly unsuccessful.

REDCAP

Image

Image

My vantage and memory for what went down on Redcap's second turn is a little hazy, but I believe the Necromancer was attempting to raise the dead who were eliminated last turn. If I recall, the spell went awry, and lawmaster actually controlled all the dead who were raised! Some close-combat then ensues.

Image

An Anne-Frankenman proceeds to intimidate and claim the black dragon as his own. If I'm not mistaken, that dragon then breathed fire on some of the fortress guardians.

Image

And the third/final Rocket Knight meets his fate at the spell-casting hands of a specter...

LAWMASTER

Image

Lawmaster's Hero decides that if he cannot have the dragon, no one can. The giant OTC? club bashes the dragon into oblivion, and the Anne-Frankenman is disrupted on the tower roof! Soon after, the Anne-Frankenman is also destroyed.

Image

Fortress Defenders engage the Horror Corps Sergeant. Though he survives for some time, the defenders to eliminate him as well.

DIRTYCAJUN

Image

Image

...News of their commanding officer's demise puts the Horror Corps in a mood. One of the recon jeeps decides to ram straight into a tree, sending it flying and crashing into a fortress defender.

Image

Undeterred by flying plantlife, the jeep continues through and plows a convict. Nearby, the Skellie Heavy Bolter guns down a Pheonix.

Turn 3

REV

Image

And now it is turn 3...a turn fraught with action and significant events. Here is a general shot of the movement of the Space Knights. The Mechanik and Techmage wander toward the center of the field, razorbows find cover and other strategic positions against the undead, and...

Image

Sebastian is just an inch short of claiming and wooing the Hula girl! Bonswa is just steps away with Sebastian's chest of bribery money and a plate of dinner for the (hopefully) new couple.

Image

Image

In other news, the Techmage decided that there was too little carnage in so much potential. Telepathically hacking into the fortress's computer system, the Techmage Teleports all of lawmaster's Geo Golems onto the middle of the battlefield in various spots.

Image

And since he can't quite woo the lady of his dreams yet, Sebastian opens fire with his SMG on the Blue Knight who previously slew a Rocket Knight. A brilliant/critical 3-burst roll that expended the magazine was enough to completely trash the Hardsuit!

"TED"

Image

Blue Knight hardsuits hunker down on "Ted's" 3rd turn, combo-firing to bust off the Flaming Geo-golem's first HP.

Image

And at long last, the BK hero gets up from under the Dreadnut's boot and takes a swing at the face-shield hinges  Exposed Driver!!!

REDCAP

Image

On the Eastern side of the compound, Redcap continues to assault the fortress defenders with wraiths and Anne-Frankenmen.

Image

Image

The combined efforts of a squad of Crossbow Skellies and a squad of Halberd Skellies results in 2 HP down from the right-most Dreadnut...

Image

Back at the compound, several spectres walk through the walls and begin nega-energy spells on the nearby minifigs. Redcap was able to get off another successful raise dead spell, too; as you will see by the crawling half-corpse of a Franken-man in the next photo...

LAWMASTER

Image

Lawmaster's retribution is swift and sure. A dude with a rocket launcher suicides himself to eliminate the specters and some of his allies. The resulting explosions tear a hole in the defender's east wall.

Image

A Geo-golem eliminates a specre...

Image

And this is something new...apparently lawmaster's hero has friends in low places. Something like a spaceship/submarine rises out of the murky waters of the bay and begins opening fire on all the surrounding minifigs!!!

Image

And on the western front, terror knows no bounds. A razor tank start barreling across the battlefield...

DIRTYCAJUN

Image

Image

So what is the horror corps response when they see this new threat and are mourning the loss of their Commanding Officer? Why Attack! A Jeep slams full-force into the tank, and the Heavy Bolter opens fire; the damage rolls are INSANE and the tank is wrecked :boss:

Image

And giddy with pleasure, the pumpkin sniper decides that others should feel his pain too...he snipes old Sebastian for 50+ points of damage  No love for the courtly knight; Bonswa was unable to leap into the path of the bullet, though he tried

Image

Image

Another jeep slams smack into a Blue Knight Suit, causing critical damage.

Image

A technician hacking incident...

Image

...leads to a launching over-ride on the Shark Ship. It will now periodically carpet-bomb random targets on the field. To protect the identities of those involved in the ensuing massacres, I have taken the liberty to blur multiple faces in the shot.

Image

...and with that, a sad event...dirtycajun must leave us [it has been several hours at this point]. The horror corps withdraws...

Turn 4

Image

The forth turn comes and with it some intense decisions. Having only 1 size HP left, the flamethrower Dreadnut cannot feasibly use its weapons anymore. So, he disengages his Flamer attachment while the Heavies above fire on it to rupture the tank. Many skeletons were reduced to ash (but this shot was taken before I peppered the field with fire pieces...sorry...)

Image

Bonswa is UTTERLY MIFFED that his patron is dead. In anger, he hurls Sebastian's luggage chest off of the cliff and straight into a squad of Skellie archers (BOINK). The overkill and follow-through damage is great enough to wipe out 5-6 more skellies  !! What in the world was in that trunk !?!?

Image

The techmage (who is now all the way across the battlefield?) recalibrates the flying Shark Ship to do another bombing sweep over lawmaster's battlements (not pictured).

Image

And the Dreadnut is still locked in unsuccessful combat with the Blue Knight Hero.

TED

Image

Scratch that, the Blue Knight hero lands a killing blow between the Dreadnut's shell and between the eyes of the surprised pilot!!

Sadly, the rest of the Hardsuits have been eliminated at this point...no more action from "Ted"

REDCAP

Image

Here is another shot of the luggage fiasco. I believe Redcap's last archer tried to take Bonswa down, but missed the shot wide.

Image

...hmmm, sad day for the Space Knights. The second Dreadnut bites the dust as two partial squads of Skeletons trounce his defenses and hack him to flaming metal bits. The Heavies look on in disbelief

LAWMASTER

Image

Lawmaster's first order of business was to eliminate more Halberd Skeletons with a flamethrower on a Geo-Golem. His second order of business was to pick on my Techmage ! He shoots at it, but I use some remaining Supernatural dice to teleport our of the way. The techmage is rushed by a Geo-golem, but the golem's attacks whiff. But, when I think I'm finally safe...a Sea Monster pops out of the sea and carves the Techmage in half ....I guess fate had his number.

ENDGAME: Carnage

Image

At this point, it was getting quite late, and many of us had reached our brikwars / what-I-say-goes limit, so that game was called.

Not to mention, I was sitting with only Razor-bows, Bonswa, and Heavies remaining, Redcaps forces were incredibly thin, "Ted" had only a hero, and Dirtycajun was gone...Compared to that, lawmaster's fortress still stood, still had plenty of figs behind the walls, and the Geo-golems were still running amok.

The game was a blast, and victory by attrition was given over to lawmaster.

Hope you all enjoyed the report; look forward for more to come as I return to grad school in the next month.

Rev. Out.

Hi lawmaster! I wasn't sure if this ID was you!

But like I said, I was just using pseudonyms to protect identities from internet crime, etc. I'll edit the OP to be "lawmaster"

Yeah, the Horror Corps are badass!
Indeed they are; I hope to get some more one-on-one's with dirtycajun. The Corps flavor is so fun to play against.

Side note: went to walmart and say Monsters 4 on clearance...might have to pick it up for the heads 8) and then make some sort of "Mirror Corps"

If this is what you consider a dissapointing turnout, then I'd love to see the scale of the battle you were hoping for! Got to love massive battles like these, Keep 'em coming, Rev! :D

Well to put our expected turnout in perspective, 2-3 other friends of mine were supposed to come, and maybe 4 other forum members seemed like they'd be able to make it until a few weeks ago. The disappointment exists only in that I was sad that things impeded those folks from being able to come down. But the game was a blast and we got to hang out with cool folks in Philly :)

Not to toot my own horn, but Philly-area brikwars interest tends to pick up / fall off depending on whether I'm out there to help rope in onlookers. Redcap is very committed to making Brikwars a staple at the hobby shop, so my hope is to intentionally help him boost numbers and "promo" in the next year while I'm for-sure living near Philly.

I also expect this August Brikwar to become a staple, so mark your calendars for a year from now, Boys and Girls!

Er, Silver? Next year is 2012.

Yes, the ultimate battle of all time is next year.

RAGNABLOK COMES.

And I'm going to see you all there. Or else.

I'll be honest man, Playing against you is 90% of the reason I show up (if I am not working I am usually at the shop, but very rarely do Ben and I have the time to brikwars it up.) It would work better if we perhaps made some nice glossy printed and bound versions of the rule book and just left them inconspicuously near large mounds of lego. I will try and make this my new goal.

Also I had a ton of fun and want to destroy everything, but I am going to make a new more dangerous army this time; I'm coming for you space knights!
