Ken's Artsy Endeavors

Post by Kommander Ken » Wed Oct 01, 2014 1:12 pm

You heard it right. I'm majoring in Fine Art, with the hopes of not working at a Starbucks or something painfully similar. I'm not the best, but I'm certainly not the worst, so I figured I'd make a thread containing my work as I continue building up my portfolio. During the down times that I'm not working on anything Lego/Brikwars, this is more than likely what I'm doing with my time. Also, in order to keep this thread still in the theme of Lego and building blocks in general, I'll try not so spam up the place with un-related works. So here it is, for all your viewing pleasure.

Image

I'm starting off with something more recent. This is a piece for my Painting II class, "Realism and Abstraction." My professor wanted me to make a "non-objective" sculpture and bring it into class as part of the room's still-life. So I thought, 'what the hell,' and constructed this the night before.

What you see above is the finished product hung up for my class critique. The "Realism" piece is to the left, which is zoomed in to the bottom right corner of the sphere. The "Abstraction" piece is to the right, which is just the sphere exploding and revealing some rounder, glowing object inside. We also needed to install the sculpture of interest somewhere in the piece to give reference. Thank god it never fell during the critique or at any other point.

Was the sculpture made of Lego?

I'm glad you're following your passions, Ken. Chose the dark side back in high and I still kinda regret it.

Looking forward to see more of your works!

Yup. Forgot to mention that.

I made these roughly a year or two ago for my Principles of 3D Design class. We were supposed to take a common object and enlarge it. A lot. I don't remember how much bigger this was supposed to be but there was some math involved somewhere when measuring it all up.

Image

The materials used were foamboard, a ton of spray paint, bristol board, and electrical tape.

Here's a shot at the 2x4's underside. The inner tubes were the biggest pain to shape up and install inside it and they still didn't come out too great. Ah well.

A wild Ken appears!

Those are very well done. You just gave Duplo a new meaning.

Going to a convention this weekend in New Jersey. Finally wrapping up this prop for my Blu Pyro cosplay. It's almost done at this point. Finally.

For those of you who don't know what Team Fortress 2 is, the prop is supposed to look something like this:

+10 if you make it actually work. It looks pretty good though. But try to use less tape. (Looking at the bottom of the propane tank when I say that.) The gas pump is also a little large.

Unfortunately I couldn't hide the tape as great as I wanted to. I actually tried sculpting paper mache around the front of the propane tank (between the black cone with the holes in it) in attempt to make it look smoother, but that didn't work. I have tonight and tomorrow to touch it up, though. Maybe I can figure something out.

Also with the gas pump, I actually just noticed the size compared to the rest. You might be right about that, but I hope it'll look more to-scale once I get some finalized pictures up with less clutter all over the place. This was my first time ever making a cosplay prop at this size (the thing is near five-in-a-half feet, and the convention's size-limit for props is six) and I like how it's coming out so far.

Thanks!

Huh. If that propane tank is filled, with a proper petrol pump nozzle and a lighter at the tip of the flame thrower, it would work.
Wonder what the range on that thing is.

Although this was all said done nearly two months ago, here are a few pictures of the flamethrower prop combined with the Pyro cosplay itself. The convention was a lot of fun!

Image

Myself and the flamethrower. This thing is quite nearly six feet long, which was a worry to me since the convention frowned upon gigantic props. Luckily the staff at the con were okay with it. Excuse the shitty photoshop job, I thought it was funny at the time I was doing it.

Me and some other Pyro at the con.

And this epic picture my ladyfriend took.

More to come!
