How do you organize your bricks?

Post by Shaeph » Tue Aug 12, 2008 2:14 pm

I have a Massive pile of legos and only 7 bins, how do you organize your legos?
I was thinking:
by color
or
by size
any other ideas?
Spend each day as if it were your last.

Color, and also make a box just for tiny things for when you need to greeble or stuff like that.
I think those stats only apply to non-Mexicans.

I have a bin with POOPs, and a bin with other stuff. When I'm building, I usually see some useful pieces and put them in piles on the lid of one of those bins. I also have some tackle boxes with minifig items, and a pile of minifigs.
Often, literally, a pillow fight but may include similar situations like volleyball, particularly when wardrobe is skimpy and the action is bouncy.

I don't. I have a decent amount of Legos, but I'm pretty good at finding what I need in a small amount of time. Just remember that bricks cave in easily when they're in a tall bin and that small pieces fall down to the bottom corners and sides.

A POOP is a piece with only one purpose.

SNOT is a building technique where studs are not on top.

SNOT stands for "Studs Not On Top", basically any MOC that is built with the bricks facing outwards or down, but without any showing on the top.

POOP stands for "Piece [that can or should be made] of Other Pieces", like one of those big pieces that takes up space and can only be used with the set it originally came with. Take for example this...

No no no, that's not a POOP. A poop is a Piece with Only One Purpose, like, say, a minifig rifle, backpack, or other thing. That big mask is just a big POOP.

Also BURPS are Big Ugly Rock Pieces, Ya know, those things. Yeah, those.

I have a half my Legos organized into bins by color. That's very useful when building anything with a color scheme, obviously. I also have a few drawers of tiny pieces, you know, small things used for SNOT and greeblies, anything smaller than a 2x1 (called "two'ers" by me & meh bro). Then I've got my minifig box, organized also. 3 drawers, one for pants, one for torsos, and one for heads/headgear. I also have my yummybox. It's like a big red open-top tacklebox that I put all these useful pieces I find when digging through my unsorted boxes. It has sections, like 'useful pieces', 'little pieces', 'controls/panels', and a bunch of tidbits that you find when you are looking through. Every builder knows how this happens; you find some things that you think you might use later/are cool, and you put them, in Blitzen's case, on top of boxes or elsewhere in your area. I used to do this, I put them on top of my bedside table and eventually I had a huge overflowing pile of stuff that was a pain to go through. That's why I have a yummybox.

So ANYWAY, COLOR is the way to go. NOW.
I think those stats only apply to non-Mexicans.

I started out with three large plastic bins and some boxes. I emptied out all of my desk drawers, and as I worked on MOCs on my desk, I would gradually sift out the rare and interesting pieces and store the unused ones in my desk. My desk is now completely full, and I've only emptied one of the bins, so I guess for now I'm done organizing my collection.

also, I have a separate box for minifig elements. Yes, I keep them in elements.

sort by what you use them for IE. wall pieces, car pieces, movement pieces, minnifig manipulatable pieces. that is what is important, because it is very easy to see what colour something is but harder to see exactly what a piece is if everything around it is the same colour.

I sort using a system based upon ancient Aztec astronomical data.

And yes, I did look for a bigger image, but I didn't want to obscene about it.

Wow, I never realized there was such a simple way to organize Legos. I'm going to start using that system right away...

Call me a nerd, but I read all that. Of course, I have too many legos to use that system, it would take ages to sort.
