After their initial surprise, the Magus Guild suddenly started working as a unit. They raised their staffs and moved into range of the advancing Bull East phalanx, the mages chanting as one. The guardsmen at the back started stepping backwards, seemingly to avoid having to fight the outnumbering West phalanx for as long as possible. The white mage took aim at an entirely different target on the slope above him. Queen Lara seemed to have a nasty plan with a halberd that was still there from the past battle, manipulating it to sail high into the air.
She sent the halberd whirling through the air, towards the Bull West. At the same moment the mages’ chanting suddenly stopped, and their attacks were loosed towards the advancing phalanx. The red mage’s combined attack was blocked, but only very barely. The blue mages’ combined effort tore up the phalanx in the back, and one elder did better than the other, taking down his target with almost excessive force.
Phalanx: “Aaagh!” (typical star wars scream)
Heavy: “Hold your ground men!”
The height advantage made things a bit more difficult for the white mage, but his clear skill was still more than enough to take down the crossbowmen before he could do anything. The powerful magic blast took off his head, not even granting him the chance to scream. A bolt flew from his crossbow, the projectile disappearing high into the air.
Despite the noise around her, Queen Lara maintained her concentration, determined to achieve whatever it was she was planning.
To their own surprise, the halberd passed over the heads of the advancing phalanx. The driver shielded himself, thinking it was meant for him, when the large weapon swooped down to cut at the wheels of the sturdy wagon.
Heavy: “Watch out!”
Phalanx: “Shit!”
A crack sounded as the halberd smashed into the wood. The phalanx lowered his shield, slightly confused at the intention of the halberd, but content it had failed to cut the wheels of his wagon.
Phalanx: “Lousy Magus swine…”
Bull West
The sniper cleverly took aim from behind a tree at the white mage who had just killed his companion. He breathed out and loosed a reasonable shot, though he could have done better.
White mage: “Not so fast!”
Sensing the threat, he spun around and caught the crossbow on a shield that appeared out of his staff, disintegrating the arrow, though it got near. The sniper cursed the mage silently.
West leader: “Move! Up the slope! The rest of you, advance! Trample those weaklings into the dirt!”
The heavily armed leader’s authority was clear; the wagon started turning slowly as the crossbowmen atop it took aim. The phalanx and axemen followed behind their leader quickly to scale the ladder and claim the high ground.
Leader: “Shoot them down!”
Crossbowmen 1: “Sure boss!”
Crossbowmen 2: “I can’t see them!”
The crossbowman in the back was just out of range despite his higher position, but one shot was sufficient to take down a red mage. He fell over with a grunt and a shaft sticking out of his back. The sudden death of his companion severely startled the other red mage.
Red mage: *gasp*
Damn busy day currently and busy weekend coming up, but I'll see what I can do.
