Atomic Rockets was really helpful when I wrote my Microspace rules. It's an incredibly cool site with a ton of (hopefully) scientifically accurate content.

Just scratch the surface very slightly with a sharp pointed craft knife and then fill it with paint. Wipe off the excess and you're done.
